The One Where I Get Started

You may have heard the term "Web 2.0". Maybe you haven't. Until very recently, I had not. Almost everyone today knows the term "social media." But, what exactly is social media? How does that differ from Web 2.0? After research and reading articles, the two terms are very similar in nature. Web 2.0 is even called the "Social Web," due to their similarity and how people view and define them. Web 2.0 is a build on Web 1.0, which allowed us to use the internet to just view content. Now with Web 2.0, we can view content and engage with the content. Web 2.0 is user-generated content. Most of us who grew up with the internet probably never realized how much Web 2.0 shaped our generation and especially shaped how we learn, socialize and live.

So how exactly does social media fit into Web 2.0? Social media is one, very large and popular, form of Web 2.0. Social media is defined as "websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking." Just as you see in the definition, you cannot have social media without that ability for users to create and share their content and that is exactly what Web 2.0 allows us to do.

While I believe there is much more to Web 2.0 than just social media, these popular platforms most of us use daily(maybe a little too much!) made way for more tools and are changing the way we interact and learn on a daily basis.

This blog will dive deeper into how Web 2.0, social media and other education technology tools and platforms are allowing us to connect with people all over the world, learn from them and quite possibly changing the future of education as we know it!
