The One With Little Attention Span
Well, according to Digital Intervention, the average human attention span today is less than a goldfish. Sadly, I believe this. People are always on the go and always looking to move onto the next thing, Especially with social media. We just can't keep up anymore! You can't just have one social media account on one platform and be happy. You need accounts on FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Snapchat, just to name the "popular" ones!
Social media is changing every industry. Sports, Entertainment, Politics, Education, you name it and social media has probably taken over and changed some aspect of that industry and how it functions. Thousands upon thousands of jobs were created over the last few decades strictly to help companies keep up with social media accounts. But, with humans having such a short attention span, how does that effect us? Are we really retaining all the information we see? Or are we too quickly moving onto something else. This is why the big social networking companies, invented stories. These Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook stories are short and engaging and allow us to move onto the next one within seconds. No more scrolling through a feed or searching for content, a 5-10 second "story" now does the trick.
Is this short attention span, affecting the youth even more. Will this number keep dropping? Are we approaching education wrong? Including social media or social-like content into classrooms is evolving but has this younger generation already moved past the typical social media usage and onto these quick stories. When instructors are considering using social media, they really need to see if it is suitable for their audience and how it will be used. How can we really know if it's suitable or being used properly, if we can only keep the attention of someone for 8 seconds at a time. Only time will tell if new social tool will evolve to cater to the short attention span of humans and virtually change the social world as we know it, yet again!
